J Schatz
This & That

This & That salt and pepper shakers add flavor to the table in more ways than one. In shiny happy colors and playful forms, each oversize dispenser is 7 inches high and large enough to hold 26 ounces of salt or 9 ounces of pepper. Alessi
Tripod

The genius of the Tripod trivet? It conforms to any-size pan or platter. Tossed on the table like dice, the metallic cross shapes resemble giant jacks and move freely along a chrome-plated string to create a custom trivet every time. 155 Spring Street, Fourth Floor, New York, NY 10012; 212-941-7300; alessi.com.
Driade
Adelaide collection

“With my eyes closed, I feel with my hands what is flowing and floating.” That's how artist Xie Dong responds when asked to describe her work, sculpting rippling water or curling leaves in glazed bone china. She produces them in an artists' district on the outer fringes of Beijing, where she shares a 4,000-square-foot studio with her boyfriend, a sculptor and landscape designer, and their four cats. A graduate of the Chinese capital's Art and Design Institute, she experimented with various mediums before settling on ceramics. Her Adelaide collection of poetic dinnerware and vases is named after one of the owners of Driade. Meanwhile, her one-off pieces—bearing names such as Ripple, Wrinkled Paper, Melting Ice, and Ocean Creatures—are shown at several Beijing and Shanghai galleries, including Contrasts, owned by contemporary-art sensation Pearl Lam. 39-0523-822360; driade.it.
Nouvel Studio
Hansop

When it comes to scale, designers are famously big thinkers. When it comes to ego, ditto. Nonetheless, Nouvel Studio managed to convince 13 Mexican architects and industrial designers to put aside biases and gather in the glassmaker's Mexico City factory, where each would come upwithhis owntake on a decidedlycommon object, a4-inch-high drinking glass.

The distinctly uncommon project got its start whenPantiestudio, a branding firm, andGrupo Di, an office-furniture supplier interested in branching out, approached Nouvel managing partner Michael Kramer with a proposition: Challenge designers to immerse themselves not just in aesthetics but also in production by working directly with the manufacturer's glassblowers and other artisans. Collective and individual sessions followed, culminating in aseries called A+D>MX. First exhibited at the capital's Museo Franz Mayer, the 13-piece collection made its U.S. debut at the recent New York International Gift Fair. The sensibility range is, predictably, wildly diverse. Manuel Álvarez Fuentesadds a spirited flourish to hisEncuentros y Desencuentros glass, embedded with a mod lattice pattern of colored cane. At theother end of the spectrum, pure minimalism characterizes Teodoro González de León's untitled cylinder, with its gray-tinted base.

Just so the backstory isn't lost in translation, each individually boxed glass is accompanied by a description of the mission. 212-222-7043; nouvelstudio.com.

Jesse Kalisher Gallery
Cypress Trees

The geometric shadows of a long allée of cypress trees that led to a hillside farmhouse in Tuscany captivated American photographer Jesse Kalisher. Sieger Design
