100 Cut-Outs by Henri Matisse Debut at MoMA
Paper, gouache, scissors, pins. Sounds like the stuff of craft projects. But it was also the repertoire responsible for countless works by a celebrated French Impressionist. After an initial run at Tate Modern, 100 of them are debuting stateside at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in “Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs.” Unlike in London, MoMA’s show focuses more on the process, which Matisse referred to as “drawing with scissors,” and showcases The Swimming Pool, his only site-specific room-size cut-out, on view for the first time in more than two decades.
