13 Product Highlights from BDNY 2019
Now in its 10th year, Boutique Design New York, aka BDNY, turned out trends targeted to the hospitality design market. Standouts included rugs celebrating the Bauhaus centennial, a sofa inspired by a failed marriage proposal, and eye-popping graphic patterns including over-scaled popcorn kernels on wallpaper. Products by more than 750 manufacturers skewed residential in spirit while proving up to the challenge of hard-wearing hospitality environments and were viewed by over 8,000 architects, designers, and specifiers. Here are 13 highlights.
1. Lust for Life Collection by Abnormals Anonymous
This new wallcoverings collection by Abnormals Anonymous features digitally printed bold patterns inspired by life—and the King of Pop-Mary Poppins pattern is an eye-catching ode to America’s favorite movie-time snack.
2. Expedition by Arte
Inspired by a journey along the Silk Road, the new Expedition collection by Arte interprets five lush jungle patterns—Java, a textile wallcovering, is shown here—in 36 colorways.
3. MBARQ by Sebastian Herkner for Dedon
Characterized by deep cushions and organically shaped backs in different heights, the MBARQ outdoor furniture collection by Sebastian Herkner for Dedon features a powdercoated aluminum frame and a semi-transparent triaxial weave design that creates a basket-like effect.
4. A Week in Venice by Empire Collection Rugs
Empire Collection Rugs’ A Week in Venice—the debut product line by Tali Roth featuring five patterns in wool, Tencel or combinations of the two, including The Venetian, shown here—was inspired by a vacation in the Italian city during which she was impressed with its intricate tile, marble, and terrazzo flooring.
5. Zephyr by Artistic Tile
Designed in collaboration with New York-based designer Alison Rose, Zephyr by Artistic Tile is a textural, dimensional wall tile of carved stone with a brass inlay that can be installed in a straight or broken-joint layout to create different undulations of pattern.
6. Riley Upholstery Pattern in Sunbrella Constructions by Wolf-Gordon
Inspired by the abstract styles of British midcentury modern artist Bridget Riley—along with a companion fabric named Stella (for Frank Stella)—Wolf-Gordon upholstery designer Kathrin Hagge created Riley, a dynamic Op Art pattern available in a range of colors in fade-resistant Sunbrella constructions.
7. Fascio Lighting Collection by Lauren Rottet for Visual Comfort & Co.
The Fascio lighting collection by Interior Design Hall of Fame member Lauren Rottet for Visual Comfort & Co., including the Medium Linear Chandelier shown here, features bundles of faceted glass tubes and rods and smooth brass sleeves in Polished Nickel, Hand-Rubbed Antique Brass, and Bronze finishes.
8. Heartbreaker Sofa System by Johannes Torpe for Moroso
It’s definitely not a love seat, but the Heartbreaker by Johannes Torpe for Moroso—whose name is inspired by its armrest design resembling the halves of a heart—can figuratively turn into one when two sofas are placed side by side. Another distinguishing feature of Heartbreaker is its metal base profile, available in a variety of finishes.
9. Zeppelin Collection by Roger Thomas for Rocky Mountain Hardware
In his third collaboration with Rocky Mountain Hardware, Roger Thomas has created a trio of art-grade bronze designs: Zeppelin (pictured here), Barre, and Chiseled. Inspired by the melon-shaped legs of 1920s furniture, Zeppelin is available in 12 finishes and includes three cabinet pulls, one cabinet knob, and one door lever.
10. NowHAUS Carpet by Tarkett
With the Bauhaus design movement celebrating 100 years in 2019, Tarkett’s Creative Director Amy Jaekel has created NowHAUS, a bold flooring celebrating its legendary shapes and patterns. The collection includes six Vivid™ Broadloom patterns (and the use of up to 12 different colors for high-definition color, pattern, and texture), three woven Axminster patterns, and one Axminster tile pattern.
11. Maddox Collection by Stacy Garcia for TileBar
The new Maddox tile collection by designer Stacy Garcia for TileBar features a fun graphic pattern that’s infused with soft pastels colored on a porcelain body, created to be layered into an array of creative patterns.
12. Ettore Washable Throw by Wallace Sewell
In its BDNY debut, British design studio Wallace Sewell introduced a collection of machine-washable throws in three designs, including the boldly patterned Ettore, shown here in Honey and also available in Oatmeal and Oxford Blue.
13. Picnic Collection by Workshop/APD for Warp & Weft
Workshop/APD’s new Picnic series—the fourth in its Atlantic Collection for Warp & Weft—draws inspiration from the Atlantic coastline and features graphic woven jacquards, flat weaves, and hand-knotted rugs with crisp, curving lines that create visual movement. Done in wool and silk, the seven styles in the Picnic series are available in a sophisticated palette that includes wine, deep teal, silver, marigold, and rose.
