2016 CODAawards Honor the Best Unions of Art and Design

Ever since CODAworx, a Wisconsin organization founded as the Collaboration of Design + Art, asked Interior Design editor in chief Cindy Allen to serve on the inaugural jury of the CODAawards, its mission has been to pay tribute to the integration of commissioned art with architecture, interiors, and landscapes. This year, she was joined by other experts including Interior Design Hall of Fame members Laura BohnLauren RottetRysia Suchecka, and Andrea Woodner; Caroline Baumann, director of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design MuseumNefa Architects principal Dmitry Ovcharov; and CODAworx senior adviser Ilene Shaw. The team reviewed 400-plus projects from 29 countries, across 10 categories: commercial, educational, health care, hospitality, institutional, landscape, liturgical, public space, residential, and transportation. In addition to the jury deliberations, an online vote determined two People’s Choice prizes.

New this time is “CODAawards Winners Exhibition,” presented by the AIA-affiliated Architects Foundation. The winning teams will contribute drawings, maquettes, photographs, and videos, which will occupy the Octagon Museum in Washington during a seven-month run starting March 23.

Category Honor Submitters/Collaborators Project Description
Commercial Winner Estudio Guto Requena Light Creature – Interactive Facade The design brief required us to wrap the original structure with a system of metal sheets, thus renewing its architecture. Then, with the assistance of a computer, we clothed the building with a colorful graphic pattern based on a 24-hour soundscape recorded at various points around the hotel’s third floor.
Merit Gensler; Amuneal MFG Corp. Capital One Pavilion Capital One called on Gensler to help design a meeting and event space that would also serve as a branding tool. The pavilion acts as a marquee announcing Capital One’s arrival as a major commercial-banking player in Manhattan.
Merit Danielle Roney LLC AEON Monumental suspended sculpture emphasizes how we navigate the world. AEON captures one moment of flux within personal and universal interactions as spatial experience. The sculpture connects ground and subterranean level lobbies, utilizing 12,000 ceramic spheres and 17 miles of stainless steel cable.
Merit Skidmore, Owings & Merrill; Liam Gillick JTI Headquarters The headquarters creates a workplace that breaks down corporate silos and contributes to an open and flexible organization. A “Continuous Landscape” concept integrates three spatial typologies–landscape, social amenities, and dedicated workspace—by creating a seamless experience that weaves through the building.
Education Winner CO ArchitectsSERA ArchitectsPae White Collaborative Life Sciences Building The building’s open, transparent atrium features four points of entry to serve as a crossway for visitors heading toward their destinations. Suspended walkways are a commanding feature, and, literally, bridge the gaps between disciplines.

Motion triggers the lights and sound-score composed of melodic instruments and environmental sounds indigenous to Massachusetts.
Merit Architecture is Fun, Inc. Frost Art Museum The Frost Art Museum’s gallery demonstrates that everyone is hard-wired for creativity. It is an environment rich in art installations and evocative objects that trigger active learning and engagement. The space serves as a blank slate for artistic expression and a variety of media.
Merit Amorphis; Matthew Au AFTERGLOW Afterglow consists of two primary parts: a central ceiling piece composed of an inverted ridge line figure surrounding an ovoid plane of mirrored tiles and a continuous surface that wraps the stair baluster and extends to the first and second level ceilings. It is composed of just under 2000 powder-coated strips of custom fabricated aluminum.
Healthcare Winner Mikyoung Kim Design Miami Healing Garden This verdant healing garden offers patients an oasis. The Ripple garden redefines the design of clinical environments and offers a vibrant garden for healing.
Merit Mikyoung Kim Design Crown Sky Garden The Crown Sky Garden is a sanctuary for patients, families, and staff within this pediatric hospital. This regenerative project offers a new paradigm for healthcare design that integrates healing gardens as part of the health care regiment. The Sky Garden includes reclaimed wood from Chicago, groves of bamboo, and luminous resin walls.
Merit Astrid KroghSkanskaKulturförvaltningen SKYLIGHT Skylight pulsates in a light shaft in Stockholm’s Nya Karolinska Hospital, communicating that all living creatures need light. Skylight consists of 5 large “slices of light,” which display a sky on both sides. Skylight subtly imitates the variability of the sky during day and year, and with beautiful color gradations, imitates the changes of daylight on the heaven.
Merit Dustin Headley Prosthetic Skins Dustin Headley developed a cosmetic skin for a volunteer amputee with an existing prosthesis. Each skin was non-structural and made out of various 3D printed and CNC’d materials and acted to simulate the shape of their body, improving personal comfort and sense of self.

Merit CYNTHIA-REEVESJaeHyo Lee Suspended Stone CYNTHIA-REEVES custom designed and commissioned the ceiling armature and base of the project out of mirror finish stainless steel cladding. The bespoke housing for the artwork created a hospitality-friendly piece, allowing for the cables of stones to be secured ceiling to floor, while maintaining the luxe aesthetic of the MGM’s lobby.
Merit A-INDUSTRIAL Design Build Juice Served Here The store’s entry is set back into a patio to draw an escape from the window with a zero-setback streetscape. It is paneled with Baltic-Birch wooden geometry for the pivoting storefront glass door and continues into the interior, drawing notice to the height and ceiling architecture to compensate for the space’s narrow width.
Institutional Winner Wagner Murray Architects Vision Plan for New Neighborhood This project allowed the design team to look at creative ways to make a concrete tunnel appealing. It’s reinforced concrete construction with limited ability to apply materials to the surfaces in the tunnel because of vibration from the trains above. The design team developed patterns to create interest in the vaulted ceiling structure. The final design created “movement” in the vault.

Merit Catherine Widgery Sky Veil Dichroic glass lines the mullions over the four-story façade. Sky Veil transforms the courthouse environment for those who go there in a time of sorrow and stress. The glass curtain wall that slices through the volume of the building and creates beautiful lobbies outside each courtroom is the most dramatic element in the architecture of the courthouse.

Merit Nina Edwards Anker; Ninni Rautiainen; Janike Kampevold Larsen; Latitude Light Latitude Light is a proposal for a light installation in a grassy clearing in the Bronx. In this resting area, a range of temperatures creates the program, where seating spots follow a clock-based calendar, whose snake shape creates micro-climates. The installation thus becomes an instrument for mediating local climate in such a way that it provides cooling on the end closer to the river and its breezes.
Merit Jordan Parnass Digital ArchitectureMelanie Crean Memories of the Future Memories of the Future is a mobile cinema project that functions as a location based portrait of the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx. The new structure carries the weight of the past through the repurposed materials.
Merit Polich Tallix Fine Art FoundryMelissa McGill Constellation A new constellation emerges nightly over the Bannerman castle ruin on a mysterious island in the Hudson River, 50 miles north of New York City. Melissa McGill’s sculptural light-based public art project, Constellation, launched in June 2015 and is on view through 2017.
Merit Ray King Point of View A suspended dichroic glass sculpture that interacts with viewers as they move through space, reacting to the sunlight, reflecting light and color into the surrounding space. Visible from three levels, the sculpture’s geometry appears from the mezzanine as a curved segment of a cone, and from the main floor lobby as a wall of color dappled in light.
Residential Winner Onion Jerry House Jerry House is the holiday home at Cha Am Beach of Mr. and Mrs. Sahawat. Merit Tim Forbes A Complexity of Crows A Complexity of Crows is an observation of the important relationship the Maritime Crows have to the surrounding forest, shore and people who share their land. With an affinity to both the crows and the ocean, the client requested that a large sculpture be created to look out over the Northumberland Strait.
Merit Rebecca Spivack “Leah’s View” The “Leah’s View” project is for a private lakeside residence in Anchorage, Alaska. The artist worked to bring warmth to the Northern landscape, creating a plaster mural for the fireplace wall, a 5’ x 30’ extreme vertical rectangle.

The bridge span is a steel box girder, the safety cage is chain link, and the shade sails are durable UV-resistant woven PVC fabric.
Merit Ed Carpenter “Aloft” “Aloft” evokes feelings of ascent and descent, and sensations of the allure of flight. It makes an enormous aerial gesture in the space, springing from points along the building’s architectural grid, interacting with light from the skylight, and enveloping travelers on the escalators and balcony, as it soars from one end of the building to the other.
Merit Amy Ellingson Untitled (Large Variation) Untitled (Large Variation) is an 1100 square foot ceramic mosaic mural that suggests motion and transformation through a complex field of active, colorful repeating forms.
