Among them, the late architect Ali Tayar built a bridge between the offices of yesterday and today with Icon Work/Wall, a modular wall system that promises complete customization—with a minimum of components. “In the ‘90’s, dot-com companies challenged traditional design for the workplace,” said Tayar. “Their office environments were the beginning of a revolution which is ongoing. Icon was designed as a reaction to these new concepts.” Laser-cut steel storage units, powder coated in standard or custom colors, are stacked to serve multiple functions: as wall-based filing cabinets, freestanding supports for plywood work surfaces, or partition walls. Before his recent passing, Tayar had the opportunity to test his wares firsthand, when he specified it for the new Manhattan offices of global humanitarian organization Action Against Hunger.
