Daniel Libeskind’s Affinity for Crystals Influences His Swarovski Star for Rockefeller Center Tree

Photography by Bryan Derballa.

Daniel Libeskind calls that trip to what is referred to as the underground salt cathedral of Poland a “revelatory experience.” In addition to becoming a crystal collector, the influence can also be seen in the architect’s projects, both large and small scale, from the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto to the Swarovski star gracing New York’s Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree through January 7. Assembled on-site, the 900-pound topper measures over 9 feet in diameter and has 70 spikes covered in more than 3 million crystals. It’s the first redesign of the star in 14 years.
