Elyse Graham Makes Eyeball-Like Lighting Using Balloons

Oculus for Elyse Graham. All photography by Peter Bohler.

Ever since learning that semiotician and sculptor Elyse Graham hand-casts each of her plaster vases, using a balloon, we knew she’d be one to watch. Now she has combined her balloon technique with her resin-drip oeuvre for lighting largely inspired by microorganisms. The resulting Cilia pendant fixture, Amoeba ceiling fixture, and Oculus sconce, with its lightbulb “eyeball,” are made to order: hand-dyed in custom-mixed pigments and individually patterned with punctures and protuberances. That means all are distinctive in color, shape, and size, just like nature itself.
