Giants 2002: 1-100
This year’s Top 100 Giants increased their total interior design earnings by 10.8 percent to $1,597,649,139 despite a precipitous long-term dip in the economy that began at the beginning of the survey period reported here (October 1, 2000, through September 30, 2001). Installation space increased 13.8 percent to 528,431,829 square feet.
Just as the survey period was ending, however, disaster struck Washington, D.C., and New York as airborne terrorists attacked the Pentagon and the World Trade Center, killing approximately 3,000 people and obliterating an estimated 13.5 million square feet of office space, 500,000 square feet of retail space, and 350,000 square feet of hotel space.
Simply because of this Giants survey’s timing, the effects of these events don’t show up in the report, but a body blow had been dealt to an already fragile economy by growing unemployment, increased military expenditures, public-health crises, and an overall somber mood composed of grief, shock, and learning to live with deep uncertainty. The pundits certainly predicted the worst: no rebuilding the destroyed space for at least another year, no consumer spending, no travel.
But America has a way of confounding the pundits. In October—not exactly the greatest month for consumer activity—retail sales nationwide experienced the greatest surge for any month on record, with automobiles and clothing at the top of the list. In November, sales of home furnishings and electronics rose amid otherwise sluggish spending. Layoffs fell in early December, manufacturing orders and business investment began to rise, and there were reports that, while restaurant receipts continued to suffer, bar sales were up 15 percent on the coasts and 4.2 percent nationwide as groups of friends packed even the most upscale venues, not for mindless merriment but for relaxing with friends until closing time.
At this writing, the stock market has rebounded to August levels and the housing market remains steady. There is certainly anecdotal evidence that second homes, away from city centers, are being fixed up not as fortresses but rather as focal points for the family life that had a way of getting neglected before September 11. And the simple physical ‘thingness’ of the objects and materials of interior design turn out to provide surprising consolation.
By mid-October, 23 of the Top 100 Giants had received commissions to work on substitutes for the spaces lost in the attacks. Of these firms, 16 report commissions covering a total of 4,938,500 square feet, with a minimum of 30,000 square feet, maximum of 1,000,000 square feet, and mean of 308,656 square feet.
What next year’s Giants might report remains out there in the realm of the unknown, but this year’s group has received the most detailed analysis ever.

The second 100 firm ranking will be published in July; the final installment listing the top 50 Hospitality Giants will be published in October. Interior design fees include fees attributed to: 1. All types in interiors work, including commercial office, hospitality, retail, medical, and residential. 2. All aspects of a firm’s interior design practice, from strategic planning and programming to design and project management. 3. Fees paid to a firm for work performed by employees and independent contractors who are ‘full-time staff equivalent.’ Interior design fees do not include revenues paid to a firm and remitted to subcontractors that are not considered full-time staff equivalent. For example, certain firms attract work that is subcontracted to a local firm. The originating firm may collect all the fees and retain a management or generation fee, paying the remainder to the performing firm. The amounts paid to the latter are not included in the fees of the collecting firm in determining its ranking.
