Healthcare Giants: Stats From The Top 5

To get a pulse on the industry, we turned to our top five Healthcare Giants—

Perkins + Will

,

Cannon Design

,

Perkins Eastman

,

HKS

, and

HOK

—and the designers leading their healthcare studios.

“Over the next decade, the segment of patients over 65 will increase significantly. It’s up to us to create healthcare environments that are safe for this demographic,” reports Dorothy Lloyd, HOK’s director of healthcare. Jeffrey C. Stouffer, HKS executive VP and healthcare group director, adds, “Senior care in urban environments continues to be an expanding market, especially in the U.S. and Asia Pacific.”

Among trends seen by Jocelyn Stroupe, Cannon Design’s director of healthcare interiors, and Jeffrey Brand, Perkins Eastman principal, executive director, and national healthcare practice area leader, are experiential design, designing for throughput, an aesthetic shift toward more modern environments with bolder colors, and designers taking on more of an advisory role with healthcare administrators. “Our most forward-thinking clients understand the impact that good design has on patients and their families,” adds Carolyn BaRoss, Perkins + Will principal and firmwide healthcare interior design director. “Every choice we make goes toward supporting patients and their care,” she says.

As far as actual numbers go, we stayed within the five theme, comparing figures from 2009 to end of year 2014. As expected, there’s been healthy growth in square footage, staff size, green design, and international work. In terms of what’s being designed, acute-care hospitals make up most of the work, but outpatient facility projects have nearly doubled.
