Hurricane Chic: Stefan Rurak Designs With Sandy Refuse

 

Scavenging is second-nature for SR’s Stefan Rurak, who makes furniture and other design objects out of wood usually reclaimed from gutted town houses and decommissioned water towers. Hurricane Sandy, sadly, provided a wealth of additional material, and his Sandy Project transforms timber salvaged from storm damage in Brooklyn, New York, into items of beauty and utility—beginning with stools and jewelry. A portion of sales is donated to the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City.
