Jonathan Olivares Presents Outdoor Office at NeoCon
On Monday, June 10 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Jonathan Olivares, founder of
Jonathan Olivares Design Research (JODR)
in New York, will present “The Outdoor Office”, an educational seminar based on his current research project of the same name. Funded by grants from the
Graham Foundation
, “The Outdoor Office” is focused on creating outdoor work environments for academic and business contexts. Olivares will address the unique challenges and solutions of creating a workspace that is free from indoor constraints.
Attendees can expect to learn about the project’s various experimental designs and the end results, including the environmental impacts. “The Outdoor Office” will explore how architects and designers can overcome the financial and environmental burdens that the necessary, portable tools used to construct such outdoor spaces can impose, including HVAC and lighting. Olivares will highlight new types of furniture and architectural elements that are easier on the budget and environment.
Boston-born Olivares graduated from
Pratt Institute
’s industrial design program after studying design and management at the
New School University
. He founded JODR in 2006, which has been dedicated to industrial design, design related research and exhibition design ever since. In 2011, his firm’s first product for
Danese Milano
, Smith, won the prestigious Compasso d’Oro design award in Italy. Also in 2011, Olivares published, his book,
A Taxonomy of Office Chairs

Phaidon Press
), bases on his four-year research of that same subject.

in Lisbon which have ranged from exploratory curatorial projects to overviews of the office’s work.
