New York-Based Workstead Takes a Modernist Approach to Its Latest Collection

Based in Brooklyn and Hudson, New York, Workstead collaborates with local fabricators, and 90 percent of its components are machined in the U.S. The 10-year-old studio’s Archetype series was inspired by the Modernist ethos; some items in the collection were even photographed in Philip Johnson’s Glass House. The line encompasses three typologies—sconce, pendant, and floor lamp—each available in three shapes and brass, nickel, and bronze finishes. Vault takes cues from Louis Kahn structures; Gable nods to Johnson’s keen awareness of scale; and Block is a composition of interlocking Cubist forms. “I love the idea that the Modernists approached a light fixture just as they did a building,” co-founder Robert Highsmith says.
