Rare Vintage Radios on View at the MAKK in Germany
Words were first electronically transmitted to a remote receiver 120 years ago. That event sparked a whirlwind of innovations, quickly making radio the world’s first mass medium. But not all the pioneers were techies. Design developed just as rapidly, from bare-bones devices in wooden boxes to innumerable elaborate materials and shapes. In Cologne, Germany, the Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln draws on its extensive permanent collection as the cornerstone of “Radio Zeit,” on view through June 5. The show is peppered with boldface names, from Walter Dorwin Teague to the recently departed Richard Sapper and Interior Design Hall of Fame member Philippe Starck.
