Riding The Wave: A Photo Exhibit at the Annenberg in L.A. Documents Climate Change
Sandy. Tohoku. Katrina. Tragedies all, but they’ve also created opportunities for design innovation. “Sink or Swim: Designing for a Sea Change,” at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles, December 13 to May 3, documents global stories of destruction as well as rebuilding efforts by the likes of Toyo Ito and Shigeru Ban.
A first for the Annenberg, some of the exhibit’s 100 images were commissioned by the institution, such as one by Paula Bronstein of the 20-mile-long seawall along Japan’s Sendai coastline, or another by Iwan Baan of the stilt houses in the lake village of Ganvie, Benin, referred to as the Venice of Africa. The Annenberg also commissioned a documentary on climate-resilient strategies for waterfront communities that includes interviews with artists, scientists, and architects, including Thom Mayne of Morphosis.
