Students Imagine the Airport of the Future

Fentress Architects has held its Global Challenge competition for up-and-coming architects for six years running. This year, 14 teams of international design studios will offer plans for “the airport of the future.” The entries, says firm president, CEO, and principal-in-charge of design Curt Fentress, “deconstruct existing approaches to building design, think about the ways airports sit in or next to cities, and suggest more sustainable ways to support air travel all over the world.” A jury of eight aviation and industry professionals—including Kim Day, CEO of Denver International Airport; Chester Chipperfield, former creative director of Tesla; and Michael McCoy, the first recipient of the Smithsonian’s Design Minds National Design Award—will award a first prize of $15,000 and an internship at Fentress’s Denver office, along with four secondary awards, on November 30.
