Style Library, D&D Building Encourage Wearing White at Spring Market for Centenary of 19th Amendment

If there’s a sea of white flowing into the D&D Building next Wednesday, May 22, it will be to honor a worthy cause: the upcoming centenary celebration of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. The Style Library  and the Design & Decoration (D&D) Building are encouraging all attendees to its Spring Market—which will feature three keynotes, 15 showroom programs, 19 experiential events, 4 cocktail receptions, and 68 open houses—to wear white, the color that has come to symbolize female empowerment.

Of special note will be a panel presentation, “Women in Design: Past Present and Future,” focused on the legacy of women in design. It will be led by writer and design historian Lynn Byrne in conversation with historian and May Morris expert Natasha Thoreson and Style Library ambassador Claire Staszak from Centered by Design and take place at 3pm in Suite 409.

As part of the initiative, the D&D Building did a survey of the companies in its building and found that half of respondents said women comprised 50 percent or more of their staff. Also, nearly all of the companies polled said they currently have at least one woman serving in a C-Suite role, while a look at the 11 major national interior design publications showed that 10 have a female editor and 9 have a female publisher or chief revenue officer.

“We were thrilled when Style Library approached us with this initiative and we are happy to support such a great cause,” said Liz Nightingale, vice president, director of marketing at the D&D Building. “Equality of women in the workplace is such an important conversation. When we look at the design industry and see so many companies doing the right thing, we want to highlight the trend to help continue the growth of women in the workplace.”

Nightingale continued: “Women are a force in our industry, a powerful voice that shapes who we are. Now more than ever, it is imperative to showcase that power. So, we hope to see a sea of white on May 22.”
