Subtractive Layers Vinyl by Patcraft Fuses Craft and Technology
Digital shortcuts flourish, and virtual reality reigns. But a touch of craft can enhance technology. Patcraft‘s Kelly Stewart learned that firsthand in developing Subtractive Layers vinyl flooring. After attempting to create textures digitally, she switched strategies and began a series of paintings. Then she gradually scraped the paint from the canvas with small combs to produce grooved surfaces. Only at that point did computers enter the picture, as scans of the originals were manipulated and layered into final patterns. Available in 20 colors, the 12-by-24-inch tiles boast a 20-mil wear layer, making them appropriate for heavy-duty commercial applications.
