The Gang’s All Here: Studio Gang Architects’ Chicago Installations

Studio Gang Architects is infiltrating its hometown art scene-at two separate venues. For the inaugural Expo Chicago, from September 20 to 23, Jeanne Gang has configured a 170,000-square-foot hall on Navy Pier as a tribute to the city grid. The 100 participating international modern and contemporary galleries will line “streets” punctuated by wider “plazas,” some tented with Mylar for sitting and dining, and a wide “avenue” cutting through on the diagonal. Then, on September 24, the Art Institute of Chicago opens “Building: Inside Studio Gang Architects.” Her Aqua tower apartments, already a local landmark, will figure prominently among projects as far afield as India, China, and Taiwan. They’ll be presented via sketches, models, plans, and photographs. In addition, architecture salons will take place October 6 and November 17 in a “workshop” complete with a worktable, pinup boards, and materials samples.
