Zico Magistretti’s 1977 Atollo Lamp Shines in New Finishes
Architect Vico Magistretti worked with a laundry list of leaders—Cassina, Kartell, Fritz Hansen. But he is perhaps best remembered for Atollo, his 1977 trendsetter lamp that became the calling card for Oluce. “It completely revolutionized the way we imagine the classic bedside lamp,” president Antonio Verderi says of the 1979 Compasso d’Oro winner, which then joined the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and others.
After 40 years, opposites still attract, as the sharp-tipped cone supports the semisphere above, the aluminum body finished in white, black, or gold, now marking 10 years of production. But stay tuned: The company will corral international artists later this year for an event heralding Atollo as the intersection between art and design.
