Ali Tayar Remembered in “Systems & One-Offs” at R & Company

A year after Ali Tayar‘s death, the New York design cognoscenti came out to support a retrospective of the late designer’s work at R & Company. The evening, co-hosted by Cindy Allen, gathered some of Tayar’s closest friends, patrons, and admirers to toast the legacy of the architect. Titled “Ali Tayar: Systems & One-Offs,” the exhibition—co-curated by Dung Ngo—tracks Tayar’s modular and engineering-driven approach to furniture, interiors, architecture, and products. Among the pieces on view are some of his earliest commissions—including NEA Table and Ellen’s Brackets—that were included in the 1995 MoMA exhibition “Mutant Materials in Contemporary Design.” Works in wood, aluminum, and glass demonstrate his restrained approach to materials and forms, while photographs and sketches of his building projects reveal how his innovative thinking moved across scales.

Proceeds from the exhibition will go toward the creation of the Ali Tayar Fellowship at Parsons School of Design, where Tayar taught. The fund in his name will support graduate students in Parsons’ School of Constructed Environments.
