Top Designers Gather at Mercado Little Spain In Hudson Yards for Wine & Design
Tuesday night, renowned designers and manufacturers mingled with a glass of cava in hand at the eighth annual Wine & Design in New York, hosted by Interior Design and Interiors from Spain. As guests settled into the Spanish Diner in Mercado Little Spain—the vast culinary haven at 10 Hudson Yards—Interior Design’s Editor in Chief, Cindy Allen, introduced guests to their sommelier for the evening, Anthony Giglio.
But before the design crowd began to swirl, sniff, and sip the wines in their glasses, María Peña, CEO of ICEX Spain Trade and Investment, spotlighted the event’s evolution, reminding everyone in the room that Spanish wine is inseparable from the country’s culture. “When we talk about Spanish wine, we talk about many things…culture, lifestyle, health, and the older generations and newer generations working together with innovations and new technologies,” she said. The same could be said for Spanish design, visible in the finishes, lighting, and materials throughout Mercado Little Spain.
More than 80 people joined this year’s event, sampling a diverse selection of wines, including a rosé from Spain’s Rioja region and red from the Costers del Segre region. “It’s my favorite event,” said Joan Michaels of 2Michaels between bites of passed hors d’oeuvres, which included croquettes and petite cups of ceviche. Paola Zamudio of NPZ Style + Décor echoed Michaels’ sentiment. “I love seeing so many designers in one room,” Zamudio said. “It’s a beautiful space where we have the opportunity to meet new people and taste some delicious wines.”
As the evening came to a close, Allen raised a glass for a final toast before announcing the winners of prizes, donated by the event’s sponsors. Wine & Design guests continued the festivities down the hall in Mercado Little Spain during Spain’s Great Match, an annual celebration of Spanish culture and wine organized by the Trade Commission of Spain.
“The Spanish Trade Commission, representing these fabulous Spanish companies, has become an essential resource for our specifying community and a meaningful partner of ours,” said Allen of the festivities. “We celebrated what we do best together: Wine-ed and designed.”
