2013 BOY Winner: Kitchen/Bath
This is a story of coming full circle. Robert Kerr worked for Interior Design Hall of Fame member Clive Wilkinson. Hailey Soren did, too, but after Kerr left, so the two never met until her parents were looking to build a beach getaway. Since her firm, Hungary Louis, does no architecture, she went to Wilkinson for a recommendation. And that’s how his “graduates” came to collaborate on this 2,500-square-foot house.
Playful glass mosaic tiles are a recurring theme. They surface the wall that simultaneously wraps the kitchen island and defines one side of the central stairway. Tucked behind the kitchen, the master bathroom shares the materials palette of the public zone. Mosaic tiles line the shower, and the vanity counter’s white quartz composite is the same as the kitchen’s. Cabinetry is walnut. Flooring is teak, radiant-heated. Downstairs, the grandchildren share a bathroom in Halloween colors: orange or black ceramic hexagonal tile, plus black-and-white baby whales for wallpaper.
