3 International Concept Stores Bring the Drama

These three concept stores around the globe bring their own unique flavors to the table.

Firm: Wutopia Lab

Project: Sinan Books

Site: Shanghai

Standout: Architectural restrictions on St. Nicholas Church, a century-old landmark, drove a dramatic solution: a 45-ton custom steel shelving system that conforms to the domed interior and accommodates 1,000 volumes of international poetry, the now-bookstore’s specialty.

Firm: Leaping Creative

Project: Suofeiya Workshop

Site: Guangzhou, China

Standout: In the home-furnishings showroom, a rotating carousel showcases how the manufacturer’s cabinetry, dressers, and beds are custom fabricated by advanced industrial robots, amid a pink-and-blue brand identity, also by Leaping Creative.

Firm: Landini Associates

Project: Esselunga

Site: Brescia, Italy

Standout: At the latest outpost of the country’s first supermarket chain,
LED super graphics guide shoppers through the 50,000-square-foot
mega-store, which is entered through a glass “production” box offering
a café and behind-the-scenes peeks into the bakery.
