4 Imaginative Environments for Children to Play and Learn

Four spaces that aim to create stimulating and engaging environments for children:

1. Firm: Moriyuki Ochiai Architects

Project: Toho World Preschool

Location: Tokyo, Japan

Standout: Spray-painted murals of abstracted sunsets and waterfalls and the ceiling’s mirror “lakes” bring a fantasy version of nature indoors.

2. Firm: Von M

Project: Kinder und Familienzentrum

Location: Ludwigsburg, Germany

StandoutAn addition clad in strips of varnished spruce has the look of a barn, in keeping with the converted farmhouse where this facility got its start.

3. Firm: Junya.Ishigami + Associates

Project: Amyu Atsugi

Location: Atsugi, Japan

StandoutResponding to a day-care center’s location in a high-rise, partitions surfaced in lime mortar float through the space like cartoon clouds.

4. FirmPlatane & Ilic Associés

Project: Collège Dora Maar

Location: Saint-Denis, France

StandoutBright colors, from window frames to furniture, might have come straight from the brush of Pablo Picasso, whose mistress is the high school’s namesake.
