Domus Academy School of Design at NSAD: A Growing Global Design Marketplace

Last fall, New School of Architecture and Design (NSAD) offered an interior design course to architecture students. This fall they’re offering a complete program.

Elena Pacenti, director, Domus Academy School of Design at NSAD, says adding interior design is a natural fit because the design-related specialties like architecture, construction management, and digital media arts are already part of the school. Interdisciplinary experiences will play a major role. And there will be a constant focus on global design.

“The field of design is evolving rapidly as our communities become more diverse and the world becomes more connected through advances in technology and communication,” says Pacenti. “Students will consider contemporary issues such as identity and branding, integration with technology and digital media, new lifestyle trends, and cultural and social needs.”

Simultaneously they will be prepared for careers in a variety of design-related fields, guided by a board that includes Robin Wilson Carrier, president of the San Diego chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers and principal of Robin Wilson Interior Design; Ezequiel Farca, chief creative and executive officer of EZEQUIELFARCA, an international design firm in Mexico City; and Paolo Giachi, an architect and interior designer who designs global retail stores for the likes of Prada, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton and Jimmy Choo.

Adds Pacenti, “The Domus Academy philosophy is based on the concept that design is a reflection of the human experience: how people interact with spaces, objects and other interfaces through both a historical and current perspective.”
