Edge & Lines Creates Its Own Hospitality Hot Spot at Florida’s Hotel Palms

Many designers fantasize about opening their own hotel, but Edge & Lines co-owners Julie and Greg Schwartzenberger made that a reality. With bright ideas and hard work, they transformed a 1947 motor court on a corner lot in Florida’s Atlantic Beach into the Hotel Palms: 10 rooms and a suite spread across 4,000 square feet and a verdant courtyard.

“The design concept is Old Florida Vernacular,” Julie says, which meant art installations with leafy details and wallpaper inspired by the bootjack structure of local palm trees, custom furniture in reclaimed wood, and color-saturated pillows. The end result retains not only the former motor court’s mid-century modern aesthetic but also the original concrete floors, unearthed beneath dark, wall-to-wall carpet. “Back then they used shells from the beach as aggregate, so our exposed concrete floors have crushed shells in them,” Julie says. “Score!” Now that’s a dream come true.
