Elena Salmistraro’s Flatlandia Rug Collection for CC-Tapis Riffs on a Sci-Fi Classic
In his 1884 novella Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, theologian Edwin Abbott Abbott conjured a two-dimensional world inhabited by geometric figures. In her Flatlandia collection, ceramist and illustrator Elena Salmistraro diversifies her portfolio by adapting the science fiction story into rugs for CC-Tapis. “Triangles, lines, circles, and squares overlap, meet, and collide, just as they do in the book,” she says. Patterns such as Pitagora and Eulero are expressed in two ways: a muted field of shapes in thick, nubby Himalayan wool, and their Outline variants, featuring precise graphics in finer yarn. Each rug measures 91 by 118 inches and is hand-knotted in Nepal in custom colors.
