Fernando Mastrangelo’s Thaw Collection Balances Geometric and Gentle
Awestruck by glaciers in Patagonia, Fernando Mastrangelo was moved to re-create their majesty by hand, and Thaw began. The custom line features a triangular coffee table, a mirror, a sconce, and a diorama-style console. To get the rough-hewn effect, he cast layers (one at a time) of cement and crushed and powdered glass in molds before carving the objects. Glass aggregate, added to the console and mountainous mirror, produces a smoother surface. Mastrangelo has called nature’s behemoths “geometric and gentle at the same time,” an apt description of his work as well.
