Brooklyn Museum Launches Exhibit on African Fashion<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Photographer Sanl\u00e9 Sory is 80 now\u2026but in the 1970\u2019s, during the postcolonial period of his native Burkina Faso<\/a>, he posed teenagers in front of hand-painted back\u00adgrounds to document the era\u2019s zeitgeist, like in Je Vais D\u00e9coller, a 1977 black-and-white image of a young man boarding a plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It joins some 180 pieces of clothing, textiles, and jewelry in \u201cAfrica Fashion,\u201d organized by Victoria and Albert Museum and landing at the Brooklyn Museum in New York, June 23 to October 22. Dozens of creatives from 20 countries are included. From Nigeria is a yellow ensemble by Bubu Ogisi\u2019s womenswear label IAMISIGO and Stephen Tayo\u2019s photograph of Lagos Fashion Week models linking hands, while Djiboutian costume designer-photographer Gouled Ahmed\u2019s black-and-white self-portrait was taken in Ethiopia. Additionally, Brooklyn Museum curators issued an open call for museumgoers\u2019 related personal photographs to augment the exhibition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
