2014 Product Trend: Imaginative Lamp Shades

Heloisa Righetto, Associate Editor at global trend forecasting service Homebuildlife, predicts that 2014 will see the introduction of more adventurous lighting designs: “Designers are more comfortable with LED technology so pieces are more decorative than ever,” she explains. “I think for 2014 we will see more intricate shades, from folded paper sheets inspired by origami to hand knitted lampshades.” Examples include Issey Miyake’s sculptural IN-EI lampshades for Artemide that are constructed using a fabric made from recycled PET bottles, as well as Ariel Zuckerman and Oded Sapir’s ‘knitted’ lamps, which feature soft covers made using industrial knitting and manual crochet techniques. Simon Frambach’s squeezable Soft Light takes tactility to the next level by encasing an energy saving light bulb in polyurethane foam.
