Fifth Annual NYCxDESIGN Award Winners Honored in Virtual Ceremony
On Monday, May 18th, the A&D community celebrated New York City’s top products and projects during the first ever virtual NYCxDESIGN Awards, presented by Interior Design and the International Contemporary Furniture Fair. Though winners and honorees could not come together in person for festivities this year due to the pandemic, host Editor in Chief Cindy Allen encouraged viewers to hoot and holler at their screens, cheering on friends and colleagues from their respective homes throughout the hour-long event.
“We know that we will come out of this stronger than ever, and the design community will continue to inspire and provide solutions to the world,” Allen said, kicking off the virtual awards. “We’d never cancel on you,” she added. This year, winners and honorees were chosen from 555 total entries, with 343 products, including those coming to New York City from 24 countries, and 212 projects representing all five boroughs in the mix. While more than 700 guests attended last year’s ceremony at Pier 17 in Manhattan, this year even more people had an opportunity to participate given the digital format.
And what better way to commemorate the fifth annual NYCxDESIGN Awards in its new rendition than by unveiling a never-before-seen award statue? This year’s winners will receive a giant iridescent X “representing the intersection of all things design,” according to Allen. Interior Design collaborated with MakerSpace and the Brooklyn Army Terminal to create the X, which is made from aluminum with layers of plated nickel and zinc chromate for a special touch.
Allen offered a sincere thank you to NYCxDESIGN Award 2020 jurors, sponsors—ICFF, NYCxDESIGN, New York City Economic Development Corporation, MakerSpace, Wanted Design, and Brooklyn Army Terminal—gold partners Gandia Blasco and DDC, and Material Bank, which enabled undergraduate and graduate students to submit their designs for free by sponsoring the Student Product Design category. Then the ceremony got underway.
Up first, Allen announced project winners, including Lubrano Ciavarra Architects for the Grand Concourse Academy Charter School in the Bronx; Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Gensler for the new MoMA; ICrave, Perkins Eastman, and Ennead Architects for the David H. Koch Center for Cancer Care at Memorial Sloan Kettering; and the team behind the TWA Hotel in Queens. Then she shifted gears to announce product winners, including Nina Cho for Maung Maung Mirrors, Agape for the Immersion Collection, Shaw Contract for the Rugs Program, and Designtex for The Bauhaus Project to name a few.
