IIDA NY’s Sustainable Quilt Auction Benefits Be Original Americas

More than 300 members of the interior design community attended the New York Chapter of the
International Interior Design Association’s
(IIDA NY) seventh annual Sustainable Quilt Auction last month, raising an undisclosed sum benefitting
Be Original Americas
, an association that supports and protects original, authentic design.
“This year’s quilt auction was the best turnout since its inception in 2008,” says Suzette Rhodes, Sustainable Quilt Auction director. “Our auction is truly a combination of sustainability, philanthropy and community.”
Over 1600 hours of work went into creating the quilts. Participants were required to create a unique one of a kind quilt made from discarded materials and fabrics from fabric showrooms, product libraries and industry samples. There were nine quilts total at the auction, created by teams of five to eight members representing New York-based design firms.

Gensler’s
“Kuilt—The Transformative Quilt” was among the most popular. It incorporated classic quilting techniques with the fashion-inspired form of a traditional Kimono. A pineapple placed in the center was intended as a symbol of hospitality, since Gensler envisioned the the quilt being used for houseguests.
“Nighthawks in Soft Relief” by
LMNOP
(Leadership, Mentoring, Networking Opportunities for A+D Professionals) was another favorite. Inspired by Edward Hopper’s iconic 1942 masterpiece of the same name, the design evokes a mood still felt in the late hours of New York even 73 years after the painting was first made.
But according to
Davis Brody Bond’s

, it was the “Able Lincoln” quilt by a team from Davis Brody Bond, Spacesmith, M Moser, and Herman Miller that received the highest bid of the night.
“We are so pleased at the work of our quilting teams, and are so appreciative of the time and dedication they offered to the event,” says Rhodes. Nine lucky high-bidders are surely pleased too.
