‘s Health Care and Wellness Advisory Council convenes twice yearly to discuss current and futuristic design for health care and wellness. The Council is comprised of top industry leaders who will advise
Interior Design
on innovation, standards, challenges, and design trends in health care, and the emphasis on designing for wellness across all industry sectors.
Hawks began his career with parent company Glen Raven, Inc. in 1987. A graduate of East Carolina University with a BS degree in Industrial Technology his early years with the company were in Director of Product Development roles for two different divisions prior to joining the Sunbrella group in 2001. Within the Sunbrella group, Hawks has occupied positions in sales, business develop and as market manager. Currently his responsibilities include Contract Market Manager and A&D brand education. Goals are to position the Sunbrella and Sunbrella Contract brands in the commercial A&D community focusing on indoor upholstery, outdoor upholstery and shade product lines. Hawks operates out of the corporate office in Burlington, NC and resides in Mebane, NC with his wife and two energetic children.
Amy has been in the construction industry for most of her professional career after graduating from Bloomsburg University. She joined Construction Specialties over 25 years ago learning the construction market by working as a customer service representative, regional sales manager, national sales manager to moving to her current role as the Business Development Manager for C/S’s largest division, Interior Wall Protection.
Amy Mays is an Interior Design Principal based in HDR’s Manhattan office. She has significant knowledge in patient centered care, evidence based design and has dedicated her career to creating innovative healing spaces. She has significant experience in acute care, critical care and pediatric healthcare design and is an award-winning designer and speaker on numerous healthcare design topics. During her career, Amy has had the opportunity to work with some of the leading healthcare organizations in the country, such has Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Columbia University Medical Center and the #1 ranked children-s hospital, The Children-s Hospital of Philadelphia. Her collaborative style and leadership skills help design teams bring amazing results to clients and their projects.
Ashley Ginn leads product introductions for the healthcare and education market segments for Shaw Contract Group. Her experiences working with Shaw Custom Design and our workplace studio has helped her to better understand the needs of our customers. Ashley is a graduate of Auburn University.
Bill leads Steelcase Health efforts to encouage organizations to improve the delivery of healthcare, whether it be the design of the physical environment or understanding how culture, work process and technology impact safety and quality. He values the contribution of partners, innovative companies and progressive nonprofits organizations.Together, they work in delivering products and services that are valued by clinicians, patients and consumers.
Barber joined Ecore in 2011 to champion the development of a new patented lamination process called itstru technology. In 2013, he became the Vice President of Sales and Marketing, and in 2015 he was named Vice President of Marketing and New Product Development. In this role, Barber is responsible for overseeing everything creative from marketing to branding and product development. Barber brings a creative thought process to Ecore that didn-t previously exist. He spends more time focused on what Ecore can do as opposed to what it can’t.
I have been actively engaged in the Interior Design Profession for almost 30 years, primarily in Health Care and Higher Education, with continuing growth in leadership skills and project complexity. It is my joy to work as liaison between the design team and user groups in a project, to help create spaces which enhance healing, and which make a better place for care givers to work. My background includes 10 years as an Interior Designer and Senior Designer at the University of Michigan Health Systems leading projects of all sizes, including a now replaced replacement for Mott Children’s hospital that was a pioneer in family centered care.
Daphne is an project manager and interior designer with 14 years experience in healthcare and workplace sectors. Her design philosophy is centered around the human experience. Her interiors reflect a thoughtful and holistic approach- from fabrics and furniture, to technology integration, all supporting the client-s goal of a compassionate patient & caregiver environment. As a project manager, she focuses on fluid communication between the users, client and design team to deliver transformative and healing spaces for the individual and the community. Daphne has extensive experience in medical planning and has served as lead designer for clients such as Cedars-Sinai & UCLA Health. Her current projects include the LA County Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center and multiple outpatient physician offices with Cedars-Sinai.

Dorothy Lloyd is a director of HOK’s global Healthcare practice based in San Francisco. With more than three decades of experience as an architect and consultant in the healthcare industry, Dorothy focuses on creating high-performance environments that support patient-centered services. Her clinical and technical expertise enables her to plan highly successful facilities for healing, learning and discovery. Dorothy’s work promotes operational efficiency, design excellence and long term resiliency, enabling healthcare facilities to deliver the best patient outcomes and drive innovation in clinical design.
Haley Driscoll, Director of Healthcare Interior Design and a Senior Associate of Francis Cauffman, has been dedicated to designing healthcare interiors for over 20 years. Her expertise in supervising interior design projects and team members has been instrumental to growing Francis Cauffman’s healthcare interiors portfolio. She brings a holistic approach to projects, and she has helped integrate interiors into the upfront planning efforts of the design process to achieve better results. She has earned the role of -trusted advisor- from many of her clients.
Jane Rohde is the principal/founder of JSR Associates, Inc., a senior living consulting firm providing strategic master planning and re-positioning, focus groups for creative program and care model development, and design services based on evidence based research, sustainable design principles, and resident-centered programming. Jane promotes culture change and universal design. She sits on the ESC, a Center for Health Design committee and on the 2014 and 2018 revision committee for the Guidelines Design and Construction of Residential Health, Care, and Support Facilities. Jane chairs the Senior Living Sustainability Guide® committee, a dedicated group of volunteers responsible for a sustainability guide for senior living projects. Jane is the recipient of the 2015 Changemaker Award from The Center for Health Design for Environments for Aging.

Jennifer M. McGregor, IIDA, LEED AP serves as Senior Director, Global Business Development for The Gettys Group in Chicago. She began her career designing replacement hospitals for Healthcare Corporation of America while at Earl Swensson Associates in Nashville, TN. Having served in leadership capacities at companies such as Steelcase, Knoll and IA Interior Architects, Jennifer brings her design expertise and business acumen to perpetuate the Gettys Group hospitality and lifestyle brand into alternative markets -such as healthcare & corporate- all with a thirst for elevating the guest/client experience.
Jocelyn Stroupe is a principal with Cannon Design, an integrated design firm serving clients worldwide from 17 offices. Of its 1000 person workforce, 400 professionals are dedicated solely to the planning, design, and engineering of healthcare facilities. As Cannon Design-s Director of Healthcare Interiors and with more than 25 years of experience, Jocelyn effectively connects planning, programming, branding and facility management with cohesive, comforting interior design. She excels at working with clients to achieve optimistic interiors that create a positive experience for patients, family and staff. Jocelyn is a Founding Member of the American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers, where she served as the President of the Board of Directors from 2011 – 2013. She is an Evidence-Based Design Accredited Professional (EDAC) with the Center for Health Design and serves as a member of the Board of Advisors at The University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design. Jocelyn presented extensively on healthcare and design topics at conferences such as Healthcare Design, ASHE PDC, the Center for Health Design Pebble Partner meetings and the Healthcare Symposium. Her projects been awarded by the AIA, Modern Healthcare and Contract Magazine.
Licensed interior designer with a focus in health care and senior living. Utilizes an integrated approach by working closely with architectural and engineering teams as well as the client, user groups, and contractors to create cohesive healing environments.
Justin is an accomplished acoustical and audiovisual consultant. Working closely with architects, engineers, designers, and consultants, Justin has served as a trusted advisor to his clients in the fields of architectural acoustics, environmental acoustics, and audio/video system design. With a degree in audio and acoustics from Columbia College Chicago, his insight into modern architecture and how it relates to acoustical and audiovisual design has helped him be a successful project manager and designer. Justin has worked on a wide variety of projects including hospitality, healthcare, multi-family dwelling, houses of worship, performing arts, corporate, and industrial. As a professional acoustical consultant, he has served as a project manager and designer responsible for room acoustics analysis, sound isolation prediction, environmental acoustics, HVAC noise control, vibration analysis, sound masking system design, and ASTM field testing of acoustical constructions.
Kathy is the Healthcare Sales Manager for Mannington Commercial Floors and has over 30 years experience in the building products industry, mostly focused on the healthcare market. Her credentials include LEED AP and EDAC. Prior to her joining Mannington, Kathy worked at Armstrong World Industries, both in the commercial flooring and acoustical ceilings divisions. She is a graduate of Penn State University and resides in Ponte Vedra Beach FL.
Kelly Brainerd is an award-winning interior designer with HGA Architects and Engineers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She has more than 15 years of experience creating timeless and functional interiors that enhance the patient experience. Kelly matches her design expertise with her clients’ goals in a collaborative team process, building trust as she presents options for interior applications and sustainable choices. “I’m committed to open communication with the client to make a better project. We want the client to be challenged by the process but enjoy that challenge as well.” Kelly’s work includes integrated healthcare campuses for Northeast Georgia Health System in Braselton, Georgia; Virtua Voorhees Hospital in Voorhees, New Jersey; Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin; St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana; Progressive Community Health Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Kelly holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interior Design from Mount Mary College and is a Licensed Interior Designer. She is also a member of the International Interior Design Association.
Since Ken Bowman joined ESa in 1990, several of his projects have received award recognition. With more than twenty years of healthcare experience, Ken Bowman has devoted his career to the design of healing environments. Of note, Ken has served as Lead Interior Designer for several Planetree projects, including the award-winning Midwest Medical Center’s critical access hospital replacement and VA New Jersey Healthcare System’s continuing care experiential learning environment. Mr. Bowman has extensive experience in the interior design of healthcare facilities, educational facilities, libraries, corporate offices, hospitality facilities and senior living communities. In addition to being responsible for management of ESa’s interior design work, Mr. Bowman’s capabilities and experience include systematic design development based on documentation and programming of operational procedures and space requirements, construction documents, millwork details, furniture layouts and furniture and drapery bid packages for distribution to prospective bidders. His design proficiency, uniquely combined with a background in accounting and management, ensures creative, timely and cost-effective design services for ESa’s clients.

She facilitates collaborative visioning sessions with clients and team members to establish strong interior concepts tailored to her clients- mission, vision and brand identity, weaving sustainability and evidence based design strategies into complex healthcare environments.
Maureen Carley-Vallejo is an Associate Principal with over 19 years of experience as an interior designer and project manager. A talented and thoughtful designer, Maureen has dedicated much of her time at Perkins Eastman designing healthcare environments. Her approach to healing design is a result of caring and sensitivity on many different levels including the smallest of details. Maureen believes in a human-centered approach to design and considers the various human effects of each interior environment.
An internationally recognized design leader and Co-Managing Principal of Gensler’s North Central Region, Nila leads and challenges more than 400 professionals while overseeing business development for four offices. She has expanded the size and diversity of Gensler’s corporate client base, including the addition of the Firmwide Health & Wellness Practice Area. To stay at the forefront of emerging trends, Nila actively participates in initiatives tied to strategic programming, planning and design, such as Gensler’s groundbreaking Workplace Survey. Involved in numerous civic, community and industry organizations, she serves on the Chicago Architecture Foundation-s (CAF) Board of Trustees, sits on the Board of Directors of Chicago-s International Women-s Forum (IWF), the Marwen Foundation and the Young Women-s Leadership Charter School, and is a member of The Chicago Network and the Economic Club of Chicago. She has been recognized with many accolades throughout her career, including the International Interior Design Association-s (IIDA) 2013 Leadership Award of Excellence and the American Society of Interior Designer-s (ASID) 2007 Designer of Distinction Award. Nila earned her B.S. in Interior Design from the University of Minnesota.
A Design Principal and Regional Design Director for CannonDesign, Randy Guillot helps health, education, scientific and corporate clients redefine possibilities through design focused on results. Randy has distinguished himself for his ability to merge client objectives with beautiful and powerful design solutions that solve challenges and elevate the human spirit through an attentiveness to the environment. Impacting organizations and communities alike, Randy leverages the potential of design across a wide array of markets and building types for clients such as The University of Minnesota, Northwestern, Froedtert Health & Advocate. As the VP of Healthcare Development, Rich Ruhlin educates architects, designers, healthcare professionals and facilities personnel nationwide. With more than 15 years at Mats Inc., Rich is the technical expert and trusted advisor on flooring for healthcare environments. He delivers more than 150 presentations each year. Included in more than 25 years of speaking engagements, Rich has trained nursing and maintenance staff on the blood borne pathogen protocol and the use of cleaning chemicals in healthcare and education facilities. Rich is an authorized AIA CES provider and has presented certified courses to thousands of architects and designers.
When you grow up in an industry it is hard to turn your back on it. Rick Moffatt learned to install resilient flooring and carpet under the watchful eye of his father who owned a flooring company. Learning the entire process from substrate preparation, the laying down of surfaces to bidding on the projects and purchasing the materials, Moffatt decided he wanted to be the product and not simply bid on it. Manufacturing and creating design inspired surfaces tapped into his creative nature.
Sarah Bader, Gensler’s Firmwide Health & Wellness Practice Area Leader, is passionate about identifying and designing to the big idea. Sarah strives to change the way people think about the healthcare environment. With 20+ years of experience in healthcare, institutional, education and corporate facilities, Sarah brings seasoned insights to clients. She has worked with notable healthcare institutions such as Northwestern Memorial Healthcare, University of Iowa Healthcare, Henry Ford Hospital, The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, as well as some of the Midwest’s leading financial institutions. She has undergraduate degrees in finance, economics and interior design, and a master’s degree in architecture.
Shannon Oliveira has worked within the interiors department as a furniture and medical planner at FKP Architects. Shannon received her BFA of Interior Design from The Art Institute of Houston and has continuously pursued her passion in working within healthcare design since receiving her degree.
As designer with more than 7 years of healthcare and research experience, Stacey is passionate about creating highly functional and aesthetically pleasing interiors. She brings strong creative and technical skills to all phases of her projects and strongly believes in the role design has in the healing process.
Susan Homan is the Commercial Surfaces Marketing Manager for DuPont Building Innovations; developing marketing strategy and executing programs for the Corian® and Zodiaq® surface brands in Commercial applications. She has spent her entire career with DuPont, serving mostly in Marketing Management roles across various businesses in DuPont. Her experience includes developing and executing market strategies in a variety of industries including premium decorative surfaces, cosmetics and personal care, consumer packaged goods, and lawn and garden. Susan holds an MBA-Marketing degree from Auburn University, as well as a Mechanical Engineering degree from West Virginia University
Susan Lobel is VP, Marketing and Brand Development for Bella-Dura®, a division of Wearbest Sil-Tex Mills–purveyor of American-made, award-winning textiles for the interior design industry. In this role, Susan is in charge of increasing exposure and elevating the awareness of these innovative, high-performance, sustainable fabrics, perfect for indoor/outdoor use. Beginning her career as a window stylist and design editor, Susan moved on to become Promotion Manager for Architectural Digest, then to Interior Design magazine where she served as Director of Marketing for five years. Prior to joining Bella-Dura, she ran her own marketing consulting firm for high-profile design clients.
Tama serves as a Firmwide Leader of Gensler’s Health & Wellness Practice. In a career that spans three decades, Tama has a significant body of knowledge in health, ranging from projects with academic medical centers and community hospitals to ambulatory care and community health centers. A frequent columnist, lecturer and spokesperson on the benefits of generative space, Tama is dedicated to raising awareness of the impact that design has on health. She has received more than 50 awards and honors for her work and for three consecutive years was named one of the -Most Influential People in Healthcare Design- by Healthcare Design magazine. Tama is one of a few professionals who have been elected to the College of Fellows for both the International Interior Design Association and the American Society of Interior Designers.
A Firmwide Leader of Gensler’s Consumer Products Practice, Todd utilizes his impressive architectural background and interior design experience to promote in-depth integration of spatial design and planning, materials and detailing. As a Design Principal and Studio Design Leader in Gensler’s Chicago office, Todd is engaged in the design of next-generation corporate workplaces and co-working environments. Always striving to expand his design reach, Todd is actively involved with the professional design community, serving as a Board Member of the Chicago Arts Coalition and providing pro bono design services to organizations such as City Year and the Marwen Foundation. He holds Master of Architecture, Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Interior Design degrees and received the Henry Adams Medal from the AIA.
