Next Stop, Creativity: Ivan Toth Depeña Transforms a Railway Station
There’s an architectural sensibility to Ivan Toth Depeña’s art. That’s because it’s often large, but also because he has a master’s in the discipline from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. His work is driven by combining chance and intention. Which is exactly what informs his latest installation: Color Field, at the Federal Center Station in Lakewood, the first light-rail stop on a line slated to extend into Denver’s western suburbs. Poured-in-place concrete anchoring 18 painted steel structures up to 12 feet high support 60 colored glass panels. As light from the sun during the day and LEDs at night passes through, constantly changing patterns appear on the station’s 100 feet of ramps, stairs, and walkways.
