Tom Marquardt Joins HDR as Design Principal

Industry veteran Tom Marquardt, SBID, IIDA, has ceased operations of his namesake design studio and joined Chicago-based HDR, currently ranked as Interior Design Giant #24, as design principal alongside fellow design principal Tom Lee.

“I’m teaming with HDR’s expertise,” he says, “to evolve our service offerings in the areas of interior architecture and design, graphic and communication design, marketing, and brand strategies.”

The designer established Marquardt Design Collaboratives in 1998 with a focus on interdisciplinary design and offices in Chicago, Milwaukee, and London. In 2011, the firm rebranded as Marquardt+. Perhaps best known for his retail and workplace designs Atlas Carpet Mills, CF Stinson, Joel Berman, Maya Romanoff, and countless others, Marquardt made a splash last year collaborating with Milliken on a re-think of the 22,000-square-foot, 11th-floor corridor of Chicago’s iconic Merchandise Mart.

Over the years, Marquardt’s purview extended to print and online branding and exhibition and product design. “I am continuing the implementation of branded environments,” he says, “in addition to the development of workplace, high-end corporate, commercial, and retail marketing and brand strategy projects for our clients.”

An adjunct professor at Chicago’s Harrington College of Design, Marquardt is also an IIDA Annual Student Design Charrette co-founder and judge.
