4 Global Glamping Hotspots

Embrace the outdoors in style at tricked-out glamping sites.

1. Firm:  BraytonHughes Design Studios and Ray Parks & Associates

Project: Redwood Canyon Glampsites at Ventana Big Sur

Site: Big Sur, California

Standout: The arrival of hospitality company Alila in the United States revitalizes a legendary resort on the California coastline, setting safari-style canvas tents beneath a canopy of redwoods. The mattresses are custom-designed, while the new bath house offers teak showers, marble vanities, and heated floors.

2. Firm: Wade Hine

Project: Mendocino Grove

Site: Mendocino, California

Standout: The second full season of Teresa Raffo and Chris Hougie’s campground, on 37 acres of forest bluff overlooking the Pacific, opens in May. The site’s 60 tents stand on platforms with redwood decks, tucked among fire circles and hammocks, bocce ball courts, private hiking trails, and spa-worthy bathroom facilities.

3. Firm: Bensley

Project: Rosewood Luang Prabang

Site: Luang Prabang, Laos

Standout: Bill Bensley looked to the area’s famed French-Lao architecture for this paradise on a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring six hilltop tents with private dining areas and vast balconies within the rainforest.

4. Firm: The Bushcamp Company

Project: Zungulila Bushcamp

Site: South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

Standout: After one of the company’s walking safaris, retire to a tent with a private bamboo veranda and en-suite bathrooms. Better yet, take a soak in a freestanding bath, which is handmade in India from copper sheeting and zinc and offers views of the Kapamba river and natural springs—and the wildlife that enjoys them.
