Carl Hansen & Søn Brings Danish Design Icons to San Francisco

Carl Hansen & Søn announces the grand opening of their San Francisco flagship store, which represents the next step in the brand’s expansion into the retail and contract market. Located in the city’s design district at 111 Rhode Island Street, the 2,000-square-foot shop will feature pieces from Carl Hansen’s extensive collection of Danish design icons like Hans J. Wegner, Kaare Klint, Arne Jacobsen, as well as esteemed non-Danes such as Tadao Ando and EOOS.

The brand embraced a mid-century Pacific Northwest aesthetic for the San Francisco site, showcasing natural materials and earthy palettes. The store is open plan, allowing designers and clients to freely engage with the furniture. Visitors are encouraged to explore the shop’s two main exhibition spaces, coffee bar, lounge, and library built entirely of custom Mogens Koch bookcases.

The open layout resembles the company’s New York City flagship store, located in the Flatiron neighborhood. The in-house design team took extra care to make sure both stores have their own distinct look and feel while honoring the legacy of the Danish brand.

“New York and San Francisco have individual cultural and geographical identities,” says Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Søn. “The flagship stores have been thoughtfully designed to translate the Danish modern aesthetic within the context of their respective cities. Carl Hansen & Søn’s location in San Francisco is informed by the nature of the Pacific Northwest, as well as the city’s booming interest in mid-century modern design, while the Flatiron store was designed to emulate New York’s inspirational loft-life apartments.”

“San Francisco has long represented an intersection of international ideas and values,” Hansen continues. “Our exceptional furniture is rooted in a tradition of collaboration with pioneering designers, and that philosophy finds excellent synergy in San Francisco.”

The company isn’t stopping there. The brand intends to circumnavigate the globe, with plans to expand their retail operations into Asia, and develop a wider European presence.
