Art And Architecture Intertwine In This Sculptural Los Angeles Home
2025 Best of Year Winner for Residential Transformation
It’s hard to believe that this slick modern structure in tony Hancock Park in Los Angeles has roots as a ranch-style residence. That’s because the homeowners, gallerists with small children, desired their 6,000-square-foot property to be an indoor-outdoor setting for living with their collection—and offering art programming as well. With historic preservation guidelines limiting renovation to just 50 percent of the original house, Leong Leong devised a solution to build a continuous wall encircling the entire property (to function almost like a second facade), create courtyards set with dramatic rock gardens, and insert sliding glass walls at strategic locations. Sand-colored stucco and precast concrete were chosen for exterior surfaces in service of creating a monochromatic, sculptural mien. At the center of the minimally furnished main level, an aluminum-clad pod doubles as a media room for family gatherings and video-art screenings alike. Atop the new second story, which gleams lightbox-like through translucent polycarbonate wrapping, is a deck offering skyline views—with solar-powered roofing providing net-zero energy to boot.
