Studio Becky Carter’s Design for VML Winery’s Tasting Room in Sonoma Intoxicates
The golden light washing across the rolling hills of Sonoma County, like the grapes it nurtures, is beloved by tourists and vintners alike. But if you must come inside, ideally it’s for a sip at the Studio Becky Carter-designed Tasting Room at Healdsburg’s VML Winery, which takes inspiration from the natural world without merely replicating it.
“The connection to the land and holistic process in biodynamic farming, and the intersection of nature and astrology, has largely inspired me,” Becky Carter says. She uncorked a grapey palette of burgundy, browns, and greens, with woven baskets as pendant fixtures that dangle among sun-shaped terra-cotta planters. In back, a custom mohair banquette sits proudly below Dagmara Weinberg’s abstract photographs printed on panels inspired by Victorian molding.
For a cosmic touch, Carter and furniture maker Alexis Moran carved ancient celestial charts into the tops of common tables. It’s a sign that, whatever else the future holds, a glass of fine wine is a certainty.
