Winter McDermott Infuses a Scarsdale, New York Home With Southern Charm
Maureen McDermott, founder of Sag Harbor-based design firm Winter McDermott, considers the color black an endless source of inspiration—in her words, it’s simply “the best.” For her most recently completed project, a family home in Scarsdale, New York, inspired by the lavish architecture of Atlanta and Los Angeles, incorporating dark neutrals enabled her to marry Southern style with the sophisticated sensibilities of nearby New York City.
To create an inviting space, McDermott balanced marble and porcelain backsplashes and flooring with warm wood tones and cozy furnishings. And to draw attention to the natural streaks of ochre in the Arabescatto Corchia marble fireplace, she sourced gold hardware and lighting fixtures. But the element that best accentuates the aesthetic of the home is the black ironwork that snakes around the central staircase and lines the windows. Matching the steel glass door, the metalwork acts as the trim of the house, defining its structure while offering an industrial edge.
