Daniel Libeskind’s Jewish Museum Berlin Turns 25
This year, the Jewish Museum Berlin turns 25. And its creator, Studio Libeskind founder—and 2026 Interior Design Hall of Fame inductee—Daniel Libeskind, turned 80. All cause for celebration—and a special exhibition. “Between the Lines: Daniel Libeskind and the Jewish Museum Berlin,” presents the architect’s project models and studio drawings alongside intellectual and cultural context of the time. It was back in 1989 when Libeskind’s proposal won an anonymous design competition to extend what was then the Berlin Museum with an addition focusing on the social, political, and cultural history of the Jewish community in Germany. It became the Polish-born architect’s first-ever built structure, eventually opening to the public in 2001. Accessed by underground passage, the titanium zinc–clad structure zigzags, recalling a broken Star of David, all vertiginously angled walls that convey fraught disorientation. Intersecting beams and paths symbolize historical tracks of exile. Concrete shafts cut through the structure, representing the spiritual and physical void left behind by the Holocaust. “The museum was designed to provoke thought and emotion, and I’m pleased to see it continue to inspire new generations to engage with history in meaningful and transformative ways,” says Libeskind. It’s at once a symbol of suffering and triumph. libeskind.com jmberlin.de
