Nanimarquina’s New Collections Explore Technology and Seating

Kala’s design was based on drawings by Indian schoolchildren.

If you can’t find it, invent it. That’s what Nani Marquina did. After studying industrial design and supplying textile patterns to various companies, she recognized a void in her native Spain for modern rugs. Girding her adventurous sprit, she founded Nanimarquina in 1987 with updated aesthetics, but ancient processes. “Early on, we made the decision to focus solely on artisan techniques,” she says. The brand quickly diversified, from the graphic punch of Dots, introduced in 2000, to the folkloric intrigue of Kala, a hand-tufted wool family from 2008 based on drawings by Indian schoolchildren.

Mia is a group of wool dhurries that can be customized using a web-based tool.

Now turning 30, the manufacturer adds new colors to Tres, a back-to-basics series of flatweaves unveiled last year, and dips into the seating category with Tres Pouf. At the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, the celebration continues with the introduction of Mia, a group of wool dhurries that promises complete customization using a web-based tool, sealing the marriage between craft and technology.
