Piet Boon Opens Temporary NYC Studio at Huys

With the recent opening of

Piet Boon

’s first-ever stateside studio, Americans no longer have to trek across the pond to experience the Dutch designer’s sophisticated approach. Open through June, the Piet Boon New York showroom offers items from Boon’s

collection

alongside other Dutch furnishings, as well as design consultations for future residents of

Huys

, the 404 Park Avenue property that Boon is helping to convert into a 58-unit luxury residential building (

). Dutch developer

Kroonenberg Groep

is leading the project, thus far almost completely sold or in contract except for the penthouses.

Located on the 17-story neo-classical building’s ground floor, the atelier is inspired by its sister location in Amsterdam and is a predominately white space to allow for focus on the vignettes Boon created to fuel clients’ inspiration. On site to provide expertise is senior designer Renee Habib, who has relocated from the firm’s Amsterdam office, and Boon himself, who is working on several additional projects in the area.

“There are a lot of similarities between [New York City and Amsterdam] as both cities are vibrant and cultural,” says Boon. “I love New York, it’s a great place to work, and the building on Park Avenue is really nice. We’ve opened up the windows to allow more light in and have made the hallways wider, so they don’t look like a hotel.”

Habib agrees adding, “The space creates a more intimate relationship to the design. [You can] experience the designs first hand in the studio and get a full picture of our work.” In addition to designing numerous private residences around the world, the firm has collaborated on projects with Land Rover, Formani, Moooi, and others.
