When Toronto-based design firm

rhed

and Italian home furnishing manufacturer

Poliform

embarked on their latest collaboration together, they looked no further than origami, with its precise folds and creases, for inspiration. Together the two companies created prototypes of the Boat House Pavilion and Co-Generation Power Speed Boat, which they debuted—and won a gold medal for—last month at the Toronto

Interior Design Show

Principal designer and rhed founder Del Terrelonge used 117 flat aluminum panels to form the houseboat’s “skin,” each of which he scored and folded much like you would a piece of paper into origami. To give the boats a green boost, they each were decked out in solar panels enclosed in sleek glass shells to wick energy from the sun. “The more the Co-Generation Power Speed Boat is in use, the more solar energy it can store in its battery cells and relay back to the houseboat for power,” says Rico Bella, senior director for rhed. “Together they form a cohesive working unit.

The rhed built by Poliform vessels will set sail at Templar Lake on the Mountain, the newly opened rhed-designed resort in Prince Edward County in Ontario, Canada, this summer. Guests at the resort can opt to stay the night at the one-bedroom, 1,400-square-foot Boat House Pavilion, which contains lavish touches designed by rhed, such as tile-granite flooring, a full kitchen, and 6′ x 10′ bathtub.

This is not the first collaboration between the two design giants. They teamed up last year to create the Pod Villa, a prototype of self-contained dwellings that also are housed on Templar Lake on the Mountain.
