The Architect as Artist: Patrick Tighe Exhibits Drawings and Models in Three Locations
Patrick Tighe knows a thing or two about art installations in addition to much about architecture and design. Following last year’s prestigious exhibition “L’Apertura 7 Windows” for Venice at the Biennale, he is mounting “Re-Drawn” in three venues. Through a new series of drawings and sculptural architectural models, this exhibit revisits a dozen key projects from his LA-based studio, Patrick Tighe Architecture. Among them are La Brea housing and residences in Brentwood and the Hollywood Hills, all in Los Angeles. “Often the entanglement of architectural legislation and urgency of schedule dilutes the DNA of design,” Tighe muses. “The drawings, collages of digital and analog representations, return to the architectural inception: the idea, the quote, the character or quirk that ignited each project.” On the other hand, the models, 3D-printed metal on wood bases, serve as the drawings’ “architectural altar ego.”
The exhibits take place at Tighe’s undergraduate alma mater, the University of Massachusetts Amherst design building from September 9 through October 7; in Tunisia at the Université Tunis Carthage from September 23 to October 21; and in New York’s Chelsea zone in January, details to be determined. Tighe is lecturing at all locations.
How did the Tunis connection come about? “I met the folks here in LA. They asked if I’d come exhibit and lecture,” he says. “I’m looking forward to going to a new place and experiencing a different culture.” And so he will.
