WooJai Lee Makes Sturdy Furniture Out of Recycled Newspaper
Paper is among the most ubiquitous materials—and the most discarded. Plus, it can’t be recycled indefinitely, as the fibers weaken with each reuse. Artist-sculptor WooJai Lee suggests a solution: PaperBricks. Recycled newspapers are turned into pulp, mixed with glue, and shaped into blocks, the marbled texture soft to the touch. But the composite is as sturdy as concrete. “The application of the material is endless,” Lee says. Witness his Pallet collection of a 12-by-24-inch table and a 16-by-36-inch bench. Wall panels are on the way.
