Design leaders flocked to the White House on September 20 to celebrate the winners of the 2013 National Design Awards, organized for the past 14 years by the Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum. Interior Design editor in chief Cindy Allen was on the scene to offer an insider’s take on the very officious proceedings. The 2013 National Design Award recipients—who will be honored again at a gala dinner Thursday, Oct. 17, at Pier Sixty in New York—are:
Lifetime Achievement: James Wines
James Wines is founder and president of SITE, a New York-based architectural studio chartered in 1970.
Design Mind: Michael Sorkin
Michael Sorkin is an architect and urbanist whose practice spans design, criticism and teaching. He is the principal of Michael Sorkin Studio in New York.
Corporate & Institutional Achievement: TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading.” To date, more than 5,900 TEDx events have been held in 1,683 cities.
Architecture Design: Studio Gang Architects
MacArthur Fellow Jeanne Gang is the founder of Studio Gang Architects, a Chicago-based collective of architects, designers and thinkers practicing internationally.
