Atelier Alain Ellouz Launches Alabaster Lamp Collection With Universal Appeal

For the first time, Atelier Alain Ellouz has made an alabaster product that’s suitable for outdoor use. Photography courtesy of Atelier Alain Ellouz.

From the sculptors of ancient Greece to designers today, alabaster continues to invoke a sense of luxury and prestige. A soft sulfate mineral, the rock lends itself to being carved into inspiring forms. As the central material for all of Atelier Alain Ellouz products, the studio’s latest collection of lamps takes the material in a new direction—one with accessibility front of mind.

“We really wanted to use small stones and bring the luxury work we do into everyone’s space,” says Maria Lesser, U.S. director of Atelier Alain Ellouz, about the brand’s new four-piece .édition Nomadic Lamps collection. The collection’s name speaks to the transportability of each artfully designed, cordless lamp. The lamps are, as Lesser explains, “like the piece of jewelry you carry with you to bring a piece of home everywhere.”

For the collection, Marion Biais-Sauvêtre, the head designer at Atelier Alain Ellouz, created four forms crafted to convey different moods. The architecturally-inspired Gamma figure, per Biais-Sauvêtre, reflects “a conversation between straight and curved lines,” whereas the domed Mona model, “becomes part of the surface where it’s placed.” Each piece also features golden brass details, adding yet another layer of sophistication. The touch-activated lamps eliminate the need for additional hardware, making for a more streamlined design.

As with all of the brand’s alabaster lighting products, a dimmable LED bulb is scaled to match the thickness of the rock surrounding it to give the illusion that the fixture itself is glowing. “We’re talking about having a piece of earth in your house that glows like a sun,” Alain Ellouz says, noting the warm light also makes visible the raw attributes within each carefully-shaped piece of alabaster stone. Designers searching for eye-catching and unique lighting, need look no further—given the artisan craftsmanship behind each Nomadic Lamps, no two are exactly alike.
