Hubbardton Forge’s Vermont Modern Mixes Old-School Craftsmanship with Contemporary Style
Au courant styling meets the ancient craft of blacksmithing in Hubbardton Forge’s Vermont Modern collection. The lighting company operates one of the country’s oldest and largest commercial forges, where workers still use hammers and tongs to shape steel in 2,000-degree furnaces. Yet the results are decidedly contemporary. In the Copernicus LED pendant, slim steel rails carry the electric current, and maple spheres sourced from a local toy manufacturer act as isolators. The kinetic Metro pendant’s bent-steel tubes nod to mass-transit maps, their five exposed bulbs emerging like train lights in a tunnel. Hook, Vine & Sinker resembles a tangled fishing net, while blacksmiths heated and expanded laser-cut steel to make the height-adjustable Bloom pendants. Each piece is made to order in Castleton, Vermont.
