A Lounge Chair That Disappears When You Don’t Need It

Designer Max Gunawan, founder of San Francisco– and Paris-based studio Lumio, still remembers the limited space of his first studio apartment, and the necessary daily ritual of moving his Eames lounger to be able to unfold his bed. “While I needed that beautiful object to anchor my space, the daily struggle was ridiculous,” he recalls. This memory, combined with the understanding that space is a major factor in any furniture purchase, yielded Otto, a collapsible lounge chair. Although it “cradles the body like a hug,” Gunawan explains, it easily retracts to just 6.9 inches wide and tucks out of view when not in service. Its slim, sculptural form defies its strength: Although weighing just 22 pounds, Otto has a seat capacity of up to 300 pounds. The perch is made from high-density structural foam with silicone backing, metal joints, and cactus-leather upholstery in six colors. (Worn panels can even be replaced if needed.) The first edition sold out quickly; the second production run is available for pre-order. hellolumio.com
